The Holidays with The Mossmans

Winter has arrived. Salida is buzzing with holiday shoppers and skiers. We went out to Bear Creek last week and hiked around in the snow in search of the perfect Christmas tree. Luckily, we found one that actually fit in the house.
Andrea has been crafting away in her workshop making some wonderful gifts for our friends and family.Today, I was fortunate enough to strap on my teles and make a few turns up at Monarch. The snow is incredible. Geno's Meadows is creamy, watchout for rocks on Shagnasty though. It was still snowing when I left. the skiing should be great this week.
If you are in the neighborhood celebrate New Years by watching the Parade of lights on Monarch Mountain beginning at dusk. After the light show head down to Monarch Mountain Lodge to listen to the Groove Farmers (George's band). Party kicks off at 9:00 P.M. dance in the New Year at 10,000 feet. For more details contact George at 719-221-9496.We are looking forward to 2009, and hope everybody is enjoying the holidays as much as we are. How did I get here by Dale Little

How did you get here? I mean to this beautiful valley. Even though it has been 25 years I remember it like it was only yesterday.

It was mid September and the leaves were just begining to turn. Me, my wife Sally and 2 of our friends had stopped in New Mexico to ride the train. We had departed from our home in San Antonio that morning. We had a mission.

We were on our way to Aspen to make ski reservations for the season. After the train ride we headed north to Poncha Pass. The sign on the road said Poncha Springs. As we crossed the Arkansas River an old hotal appeared on my left. I had to see it. Although quite weathered the sign said The Jackson Hotel. It was getting late so we decided to spend the night. My wife and I chose the Jesse James suite... and WOW! I had a dream that night or maybe a vision....... The next morning at breakfast I told Sally and our friends that I had seen the town of Salida in my dream and could describe it to them. I did just that and we quickly departed the Jackson Hotel to investigate. Low and behold as we drove down 1st street there was the river, the old movie theater, turn of the century buildings and a sweet shop.

Tall mountains were all around. I parked the truck and we began to walk drinking in the beauty of this place. I paused in front of the Ben Franklin store and told Sally that Salida would be our new home=) To be continued...............................
